Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala MLA Rahul Mamkootathil could face disqualification or expulsion from the Legislative Assembly after a complaint citing misconduct and violation of Assembly ethics was filed against him.

The Ethics and Privileges Committee of the Kerala Legislative Assembly, appointed by the Speaker, is scheduled to meet on February 2 to examine the complaint, which was submitted by CPM MLA D.K. Murali.

Reports suggest that the committee’s findings could be tabled during the current Assembly session, potentially leading to immediate action.

According to Assembly rules, the committee can recommend disciplinary measures, including warnings and expulsion, against members involved in unethical conduct or serious misconduct. 

The committee report will be placed before the House and based on the recommendations, the Chief Minister may move a motion for action, ranging from a warning to expulsion, reports added.

Rahul Mamkootathil has previously faced rape charges and spent time in jail, which adds weight to the allegations and the urgency of the committee’s review.

The Kerala Legislative Assembly’s Ethics and Privileges Committee has the authority to examine complaints against MLAs and recommend action to uphold the integrity of the House.
