Thiruvananthapuram: In a heart-warming incident, a couple named their foster son after the collector who helped them adopt the baby from Maharashtra during the lockdown time. After the COVID transmission rate dropped, the couple arrived along with little Navjot to meet the real Navjot Khosa, the collector of Thiruvananthapuram.
The collector welcomed the little one who shares her name by giving sweets and presents to him. Collector’s 2-year-old daughter Anahat also gave company to little Navjot and played with him. The couple handed over a picture of the collector which was drawn by their friend.
The Thiruvananthapuram native couple, an ASI and a teacher, got an opportunity to adopt a baby from Wardha district in Maharashtra. However, COVID lockdown was imposed by the time and they did not get transportation facilities or travel permission.
The adoption process was postponed several times due to lockdown. Finally, the authorities warned them that if they failed to receive the baby before June 30, 2020, he will be handed over to the next eligible couple in the list.
With this, the couple requested the collector for help soon after she took charge in the district. Thus Navjot Khosa contacted the Wardha collector and arranged help for them. The couple travelled in a car to Maharashtra carrying a letter from Navjot Khosa and showed the letter at all checking points. They were also exempted from quarantine rules.
The baby’s foster father said that they decided to name the baby after the collector as she helped them when they were about to lost him. They gave his name as Navjot in the documents given at the adoption centres too, he said.
