Kozhikode: The fuel leak from the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) tank in Elathur is a serious issue, although a major disaster was prevented, said Kozhikode District Collector Snehil Kumar. He informed that a case has been registered against the company under the Factories Act.
The extent of the fuel leak from the plant is huge, and the mechanical and electronic systems at HPCL have failed. The equipment will be inspected, the Collector added.
"The soil and water bodies have been contaminated, and the first priority is to eliminate the pollution. Swift action will be taken for the cleanup, and chemicals will be brought from Mumbai to clean the water bodies. HPCL will carry out the cleaning operations, and steps will be taken to remove the fuel-contaminated soil," the Collector said. He further stated that immediate action will be taken on Friday morning.
The government will submit an immediate report on the fuel leak, and further actions will be taken with the cooperation of the local residents, the District Collector clarified.
A case has been registered against the establishment under Sections 92 and 96 of the Factories Act. A show-cause notice has been issued to the company.
