Kochi: A section of former leaders of Kerala Congress and Congress has announced forming a new party, the National Progressive Party (NPP) on Saturday. The event took place at 11 am at a private hotel in Kochi.

Speaking at the launch, party chairman and former national minority commission member VV Augustine said that NPP is not against any other party. “We are not planning to join any front for the time being,” he added.

At the event, party leaders demanded to write off agricultural loans up to Rs 5 lakh and hike the price of rubber to Rs 300 per kilogram.

Johnny Nellore, former deputy chairman of Kerala Congress (Joseph), is the working chairman. Former Udumbanchola MLA Mathew Stephen and Ernakulam native Louis KD are the vice-chairmen. The party will also have five general secretaries including 'Hindu Parliament' leader CP Sugathan, and advocate Elizabeth Kadamban.

Earlier, Nellore had stated that the NPP will be a secular and pro-farmer party with no affiliation with any major political parties, but was open to all. The party’s launch comes at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Kerala and meet with Christian faith leaders.

The party is said to have the backing of BJP.
