Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a revised five-day weather forecast detailing a huge surge in monsoon intensity across Kerala. In response to the incoming spells, weather scientists have placed several districts under Orange and Yellow warning levels due to the heightened risk of torrential precipitation.

Orange alert: Isolated very heavy rainfall

An orange alert has been declared for Thursday, July 9, 2026, across three northern and central district – Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad.

According to the IMD, an Orange alert indicates a strong possibility of isolated, very heavy rainfall. Regions under this warning category are expected to record downpours ranging between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm within a 24-hour window. Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable, low-lying and hilly areas to remain highly vigilant.

Yellow alert: Isolated heavy rainfall

Concurrently, a yellow alert, signifying isolated heavy rainfall, has been issued for multiple districts over the next 48 hours. Under IMD parameters, this alert represents a rainfall expectation of 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm within 24 hours.

  • Thursday, July 9, 2026: Six districts-Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kannur and Kasaragod are under a Yellow alert.
  • Friday, July 10, 2026: The intensity will shift primarily towards the northern belt, with a Yellow alert remaining in place for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod.

Disaster management authorities have reiterated that individuals residing in landslide-prone zones, riverbanks and areas susceptible to flash floods should strictly follow administrative advisories and relocate to safer locations or relief camps if directed.
