The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several districts in Kerala over the next five days, warning of isolated heavy rainfall. The weather agency has also forecast thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds in parts of the state on Friday (July 24) and Saturday (July 25).

People have been advised to stay alert and follow official weather updates.

Districts under yellow alert

On Friday (July 24), a yellow alert is in place for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod.

On Saturday (July 25), the alert will continue for Kannur and Kasaragod.

On Sunday (July 26), Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod will remain under a yellow alert.

On Monday (July 27), the alert has been issued for Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod.

On Tuesday (July 28), the warning covers Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod.

The IMD defines heavy rainfall as 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm of rain in 24 hours. It has also warned that isolated places in Kerala may receive thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds of 30-40 kmph on Friday (July 24) and Saturday (July 25).

School holiday to depend on local weather

The forecast has raised the possibility of a school holiday in districts affected by heavy or very heavy rain. Schools and colleges may remain closed on Saturday (July 25) or on the following days until Tuesday (July 28), depending on weather conditions and decisions taken by district authorities.

Any school holiday will be announced only through official orders issued by district collectors or other competent authorities. Students and parents have been advised to rely only on official updates and notices from educational institutions for information on holidays or schedule changes.
