This unique journey, steeped in memories, is part of KSRTC’s rebranding campaign, aimed at forging a stronger connection with the public and ushering in a better future for public transport

Thiruvananthapuram: KSRTC’s nostalgic initiative, the ‘Orma Express’, has officially hit the roads. On its maiden journey, noted filmmaker Priyadarshan, actor-producer Maniyanpilla Raju, actors Nandu and Hari Pathanapuram joined Transport Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar for a symbolic ride into the past.
This unique journey, steeped in memories, is part of KSRTC’s rebranding campaign, aimed at forging a stronger connection with the public and ushering in a better future for public transport. The ride also served as a curtain-raiser for the KSRTC Auto Expo, to be held at Kanakakkunnu Palace grounds from Friday to Sunday.
The ‘Orma Express’ began its journey from Kowdiar Square, passed through Raj Bhavan, the Ayyankali statue, and Manaveeyam Veedhi, before concluding in front of the Kerala Legislative Assembly.
Recalling fond memories, Priyadarshan said, “Today’s superstar Mohanlal and I used to board the same KSRTC ‘Students Only’ bus from Chengalloor Junction. We’d all ride, often hanging onto the footboard.”
Minister Ganesh Kumar announced that in the coming days, other prominent Malayalis from the fields of arts, literature, sports, and science will also travel on the Orma Express along various routes in Kerala.
“KSRTC is a symbol of pride and nostalgia for Malayalis. The lives of countless artists, writers, and achievers are deeply linked to it. During their student days, they all travelled on these buses. Through Orma Express, those memories will be relived,” said the Minister.
“Many found love on these buses--some even went on to marry their co-passengers. We want to bring back those stories, those emotions,” he added.
Highlighting the value of feedback from such notable passengers, he said,
“KSRTC is the wheel of Kerala. The opinions and suggestions of these icons--who began their journeys on our buses and have since travelled the world--are invaluable. Their insights will help shape a better public transport system.”
KSRTC CMD Dr. P.S. Pramoj Shankar also participated in the ride.
The earlier days of KSRTC
KSRTC traces its roots back to 1937, when E.G. Salter, then Operating Superintendent of the London Transport Board, became its first superintendent. KSRTC played a key role in connecting the regions of Travancore, Cochin, and Malabar, paving the way for a unified Kerala.
With the Orma Express, KSRTC aims to take this rich legacy to a new generation, reintroducing the history, emotion, and pride associated with public transport in Kerala. The inaugural journey received an enthusiastic response from the public, further underlining KSRTC’s enduring relevance in the hearts of the people.
