Thrissur: The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) which has been facing a financial crisis for a long time started to turn profitable gradually. It is for the first time in history, monthly income of KSRTC crossed Rs 200 crore consequently for the second month.
In December, KSRTC earned Rs 213.28 crore and income in January marked as Rs 204.90 crore. It is learned that Sabarimala season and revamp in bus route made KSRTC profitable. At present, KSRTC operates 6300 buses including low floor buses.
In January, KSRTC earned Rs 204.90 crore by operating services in the stretch of 4.97 crore kilometers. In this total income, Kerala Urban Road Transport Corporation (KURTC) earned Rs 18.93 crore.
It is reported that KSRTC’s income crossed Rs 200 crore even after failing to operate all schedules. Among the 5,312 schedules, KSRTC operated maximum 4,270 schedules. At the same time, KURTC operated 392 schedules among 520.
Earlier, KSRTC complained that among average 4,668 schedules operated every month, income from 2005 schedules not touched Rs 10,000. Over 2000 buses have not been operated since 2019 due to financial loss and revamp in route. Many fast passenger bus services were stopped. Recently, KSRTC limited long distance bus services within two districts.
Compared to 2018, KSRTC’s monthly income rose by Rs 29.54 crore in 2019 due to revamp in routes and Sabarimala season.
