Kattakada: Passengers boarding a KSRTC bus on Friday afternoon found a unique sight awaiting them—a woman in the driver’s seat. What began as an ordinary ride quickly turned extraordinary, as Rajani (35) from Panayamcode in Kattakada, became the first woman to officially take the wheel for the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation in the Thiruvananthapuram district.
Rajani's historic journey began at the Kattakada depot, where she took charge of the bus on the Ottasekharamangalam to Plampazhinji route. Aswathy, another woman staff member, signalled the start by ringing the double bell. Rajani confidently completed six trips, covering a total of 150 kilometres without any issues. When she returned to the depot at 10 pm, her father, Rasalam, was proudly waiting to take her home.
A familiar face on Kattakada roads
Rajani is no stranger to Kattakada’s bustling roads. For nearly 15 years, she has been a well-known figure as a driving instructor, teaching countless others the art of driving. When KSRTC announced its decision to recruit women drivers, Rajani quickly seized the opportunity. Her determination saw her secure second rank in the recruitment exam and also cleared the driving test.
Her passion for vehicles was heavily influenced by her father Rasalam, who was a taxi driver in Kattakada. She often helped maintain and clean her father’s cars and lorries, sparking her enthusiasm for vehicles.
It was Rajani's father who taught her how to drive. Her journey as a driver continued through her undergraduate studies, with her parents, Rasalam and Shantha, supporting her ambitions. Her husband also encouraged her aspirations after their marriage. Combining her passion with her profession, she became a driving instructor.
Rajani’s first day as a KSRTC driver was filled with greetings from her colleagues, who celebrated her achievement. Their encouragement added to her happiness, making the moment even more special.
