Kottayam: The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has come up with a new plan to improve its tarnished image, which has been affected by reckless bus driving. KSRTC will bring in temporary instructors to train and guide drivers. The goal is to prevent accidents, reduce costs, and promote better driving habits among drivers.

Head Vehicle Supervisors and Vehicle Supervisors who have retired from the corporation and those under the age of 60, are being appointed in all districts for the purpose. Rs 715 per day will be given for eight-hour shift.

Key responsibilities

  • Constantly monitor the driving behaviour of bus drivers and provide continuous training.
  • Provide regular training and assess fuel efficiency, accident rates, and breakdowns.
  • Supervisors will travel on buses to observe how drivers are handling the vehicles and provide corrective measures
  • Conduct training classes
  • Weekly reports will be prepared and submitted to the Executive Director.

 Instructions for bus drivers

KSRTC has given clear instructions for ordinary bus drivers to ensure safety of passengers and avoid unnecessary risks. Drivers of ordinary buses are told not to overtake Fast Passenger and Super Fast buses under any circumstances.

Passengers often choose buses with higher fares, such as Fast Passenger and Super Fast, to reach their destinations on time and safely. However, there have been incidents where drivers of ordinary buses drive at a 'lightning speed', competing with premium buses by not giving them way or overtaking them recklessly.

The drivers of ordinary buses are instructed to allow premium buses to pass safely and avoid unnecessary competition. They are also instructed to give way to Fast Passenger and premium buses, as they have shorter travel times compared to ordinary buses.

The Executive Director of Operations, on behalf of the KSRTC CMD, pointed out that although no strict action will be taken against drivers for overtaking premium buses, the drivers should avoid dangerous driving that could lead to complaints or accidents.
