Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee has passed a resolution against the uniform civil code (UCC) in the country. However, senior leaders in the meeting demanded the All India Congress Committee to declare a statement with clarity on the matter. It irked state leadership.
During the discussion, former deputy chairman of Rajya Sabha, PJ Kurien, Lok Sabha MPs K Muraleedharan and Benny Behnan, and others expressed their opinion that the central leadership should adopt a clearer stance on this matter. Kurien emphasised that, based on the party's ability to unite all sections during the Karnataka elections, there should be no hesitation in taking a firm stand.

It may be noted that the CPM has alleged inconsistencies in the position of Congress on UCC. Congress has been accused of taking a ‘soft-Hindutva’ position on the matter. While Congress retorted saying UCC is not a Hindu-Muslim communal issue.
However, while PJ Kurien was delivering his speech, VD Satheesan interjected, stating that it was not appropriate for the senior leader to interpret matters in such a way. The opposition leader in the Kerala Assembly stated that there is no lack of clarity, as the national leadership has already clarified that there is no necessity to implement a uniform civil code. Satheesan reiterated that KPCC's position aligns with the party's stance. Subsequently, a resolution opposing the Civil Code was passed during the meeting.
Satheesan referred to Jairam Ramesh, who had previously clarified the party's position on the issue. Satheesan also highlighted that the Muslim League does not object to the Congress' stance.
Following the discussions, the participants reached a consensus to present a united front on the issue of the uniform civil code. Kurien also clarified that his stance is not against the party, seeking to avoid any misconceptions.
