Thiruvananthapuram: To thwart the BJP's move to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the country, the CPM plans a slew of campaign events in the state, including protests and seminars.

Despite the CPM state committee's decision to continue campaigns, the central leadership will closely monitor developments in the state and urge members to exercise prudence. CPM Politburo has assessed that the centre is trying to divert public attention from matters of utmost importance by addressing UCC ahead of the decisive 2024 Loka Sabha elections.

Meanwhile, the party opposes allegations raised by the BJP and Congress that the late CPM stalwart E.M.S. Namboodiripad favoured UCC implementation in the country.

However, party leaders claim that opposing parties are misinterpreting EMS remark during the Shah Bano case. The leaders explain that what was said incidentally is distorted. Senior leader and former Finance Minister Thomas Isaac wrote on his Facebook handle that fake news is shared linking EMS on the matter.
