Thrissur: Jail officials at Viyyur have dismissed the allegations that they have physically assaulted prisoner Kodi Suni. Instead, they ‘clarified’ that Suni was injured in a brawl with his jail inmates. The officials added that all they did was take an injured Suni to hospital on time.

Chilli powder was thrown at Suni in a fight that broke out in the jail kitchen on Sunday afternoon, prison officials say. He was taken to the Thrissur Medical College following the incident. However Suni’s friends and relatives had raised the allegation that he was beaten up by a group of at least 25 prison officials.

Meanwhile, Viyyur police have registered a case against 10 individuals including Kodi Suni in the incident which is said to have taken place at the Viyyur high security prison on Sunday. The jail inmates have been booked for allegedly trying to kill prison officials and for destruction of public property. Suni is the fifth accused in the lastest case as per the FIR.

The miffed prisoners initially picked up an argument with officials when they were denied extra pieces of mutton during Sunday lunch. Later on, they turned violent when the people on duty rejected their request for shaving blades. Prime accused Ranjith is said to have threatened the officials by placing a piece of glass close to the neck of prison officer Arjun Das after manhandling him. It is also alleged that the accused were in an inebriated condition during the time of attack.
