Ernakulam: Kodanad here on Thursday witnessed a special welcome for Arikomban, the rogue tusker in Idukki, whose translocation has been ordered by Kerala High Court.
The special welcome in Kodanad happened at a time when protest has been brewing in Thrissur’s Parambikulam over High Court’s decision to translocate the tusker there.

A group of people in Kodanad assembled with a banner welcoming Arikomban. According to them, the cage is getting ready and the tusker should be brought there. The apparent intention is to rehabilitate the rogue tusker as a kumki elephant (trained captive elephant deployed for catching and chasing off rogue elephants). The region has been witnessing wild elephant attacks and rehabilitating Arikomban as a kumki after training may give some relief, they claim. However, the practicality (aspects including scientific rationale) of the 'demand' remains questionable.
Meanwhile, this also comes at a time when Arikomban has been reportedly continuing its ruckus in Idukki. It is also learnt that Parambikulam residents have been planning to approach the court against the translocation plan.
