Kochi: The Water Metro project, modelled after Kochi’s pioneering system, is set to take its next step with feasibility studies soon to begin in Alappuzha and Kollam. Authorities aim to launch the study within the next two months and submit a report shortly thereafter.

Efforts are currently underway to replicate the Kochi Water Metro in 21 locations across India. In Kerala, only Alappuzha and Kollam have been shortlisted for inclusion. Of the 21 proposed sites, feasibility studies are pending in just four: Lakshadweep, Kolkata, Alappuzha, and Kollam.

In cities such as Mumbai, Srinagar, Patna, and Varanasi, feasibility assessments have already been completed and reports submitted. Notably, Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has been awarded the contract to prepare the detailed project report for Mumbai’s proposed Water Metro.

Kochi’s Water Metro service was officially launched on April 25, 2023. Its success has inspired the expansion of similar systems to other cities. The Kochi Water Metro has already transported over five million passengers since its launch.

There are also preliminary discussions underway to extend the Kochi Water Metro network to the Nedumbassery International Airport, with early-stage studies having commenced.

Officials believe that the potential expansion of the Water Metro to Kollam and Alappuzha could significantly benefit Kerala’s tourism sector, offering new sustainable and scenic travel options for both residents and visitors.
