Kerala’s AI traffic camera system has stopped functioning after internet services were disconnected over ₹90 crore in pending dues, disrupting automated traffic enforcement across the state.

Thiruvananthapuram: AI-based traffic enforcement system in the state has come to a halt after internet services to the state's network of AI cameras were disconnected over unpaid dues.
The disruption began after internet service provider Jio suspended connectivity to the project, which is operated by Keltron. The agency reportedly could not clear the outstanding payments as it is awaiting more than ₹90 crore in pending dues from the state government.
With the internet connection severed, footage from the AI cameras is no longer reaching the control rooms, making it impossible for authorities to detect fresh traffic violations or issue fines based on camera evidence.
This is not the first time the project has faced financial hurdles. In January 2024, concerns were raised that the AI camera network could stop functioning after Keltron reportedly did not receive payments due from the government. At the time, the company also struggled to pay electricity bills for the control rooms, raising fears of a complete shutdown.
Kerala launched the AI-powered camera network in April 2023 under the Motor Vehicles Department's automated traffic enforcement system to monitor road rule violations.
The project involved the installation of 732 AI cameras across the state at a cost of around ₹232 crore.
