A Tesla trying to make sense of Indian traffic has given the internet a new reason to joke about Elon Musk. Footage showing the car’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system visualising a busy Indian road has gone viral, with cars, motorcycles, trucks and people appearing on the screen, but the apparent confusion around autorickshaws has caught particular attention.

The footage shows the Tesla’s touchscreen filled with traffic detections as the vehicle moves through a crowded road. Several types of vehicles are visible, along with pedestrians, including people appearing in the middle of the road.

What caught social media users’ attention was the apparent difficulty in clearly identifying autorickshaws in the visualisation. The three-wheelers appeared to leave users wondering how the system was classifying them, turning the footage into a source of jokes about whether Tesla’s technology is ready for India’s unpredictable roads.

“Tesla doesn’t know if a rickshaw is a car or a motorcycle, it’s probably so confused,” one user wrote.

Another commented, “Tesla seems confused at that point,” while another bluntly said, “Tesla is not for India.”

The jokes continued, with one user asking, “Musk uncle?” Another suggested, “Musk should come up with scooters in India.”

For some, the chaotic traffic was less a problem for Tesla and more a test the technology would have to conquer. “If @Tesla somehow crack this crazy traffic, the car will be ready for anything. India traffic no rules,” one user wrote.

“India will humble every Tesla the second it hits these roads,” another user said.

The footage comes as Tesla continues to highlight the capabilities of its FSD technology. The company has showcased instances in which the system reacted rapidly to potential crashes, including one case where it swerved to safety 0.17 seconds before a collision that damaged other cars.

Tesla has also shared data showing that FSD-equipped vehicles have far fewer collisions per mile.

For now, the viral footage has left social media with a distinctly Indian question for Tesla: if FSD can learn to make sense of roads filled with cars, bikes, trucks, pedestrians and autorickshaws all at once, could India end up being its toughest test yet?
