
Joanna Jewel M, a social activist from Wayanad, Kerala, has been recognised for her exceptional contributions to menstrual health and hygiene awareness. Through the Smile Day Project, she has worked towards empowering adolescent girls, particularly those from tribal communities. In recognition of her efforts, she has been awarded the National Youth Award for 2022-23.
What is the National Youth Award?
Instituted in 1985, the National Youth Award acknowledges outstanding contributions by individuals and voluntary organisations in various fields, including social service, health, human rights, education, culture, and sports. The award aims to encourage young people to actively participate in national development and community service.
Each year, up to 20 individuals (aged 15-29) and five organisations receive the honour. For the 2022-23 edition, 12 individuals and one organisation were recognised. The award for individuals includes a medal, a certificate, and Rs 1,00,000, while organisations receive a medal, a certificate, and Rs 3,00,000.
Where was the award ceremony held?
The award ceremony took place during the Viksit Bharat Youth Parliament, where young participants also had the opportunity to visit the new Parliament building and observe live legislative proceedings. One of the key discussions at the event centred on the One Nation, One Election Bill, which was referred to the Joint Parliamentary Committee following a decisive vote.
Who conferred the award?
Union Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports and Labour & Employment, Dr Mansukh Mandaviya, presented the National Youth Awards. Addressing the gathering, he underscored the importance of youth engagement in social service and national development. He expressed confidence that India’s youth would shape the nation’s future, with today's achievers emerging as tomorrow’s leaders.
How many awards were given?
A total of 24 National Youth Awards were distributed across two years. Eleven individuals received awards for 2021-22, while 12 individuals and one organisation were recognised for 2022-23.
