Thiruvananthapuram: Social media discussions have intensified around ‘Project Menstrual Dignity’, a new initiative announced by the Kerala government aimed at making educational institutions and public spaces more women-friendly. Actor Aju Varghese’s Instagram post supporting the need to positively embrace such progressive changes has also drawn widespread attention.

In his post, the actor expressed support for the government’s decision, stating: “Just because something didn’t exist yesterday doesn’t mean it shouldn’t exist tomorrow.”

“Menstruation is a completely natural process. However, that does not mean all children are immediately able to cope with it on their own. We must prioritise the welfare, comfort, and dignity of our children. The support given to girls at this stage of life is not a privilege, but a necessity,” Aju Varghese wrote on his social media account.

What is Project Menstrual Dignity?

The Kerala government introduced the initiative with a focus on the dignity and health of women and girls in the state. As part of the project, school students will be granted menstrual leave of up to three days per month.

The government has also clarified that special catch-up classes will be arranged on weekends to ensure that students who take leave do not fall behind academically.
