Palakkad: A learner's licence applicant in Kerala received an unexpected lesson in traffic rules after riding a two-wheeler to her own licence examination and ending up with a ₹10,000 fine.
In a surprising incident from Kerala's Palakkad district, a young woman who arrived at the Alathur Sub Regional Transport Office (RTO) to take her learner's licence examination was fined for driving without a valid licence.

The woman had ridden a two-wheeler to the examination centre, despite not yet possessing a driving licence or learner's licence.
Motor vehicle officials noticed the vehicle arriving at the office premises but initially did not realise that the rider was one of the candidates scheduled to take the learner's licence test.
Officials identified applicant after she entered exam centre
According to officials, the situation came to light when the woman later appeared for the learner's licence examination.
Suspecting she had been the person driving the scooter earlier, officials questioned her and confirmed that she had ridden the vehicle herself to the RTO office.
After verifying the facts, authorities initiated action under the Motor Vehicles Act.
The Alathur Sub RTO imposed a fine of ₹5,000 on the woman for driving without a valid licence.
An additional ₹5,000 penalty was imposed on her husband, who owned the vehicle, for allowing an unlicensed person to operate it. The combined penalty amounted to ₹10,000.
Action taken under Motor Vehicles Act
Alathur Joint RTO K.R. Raju said the penalties were imposed under Sections 180 and 181 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
Section 181 deals with driving a motor vehicle without a valid licence.
Section 180 penalises vehicle owners who permit an unauthorised or unlicensed person to drive their vehicle.
Officials said the action was taken to reinforce road safety rules and remind motorists that driving without a licence remains a punishable offence, regardless of the purpose of the journey.
The unusual case has attracted attention because the violation occurred while the woman was travelling to obtain the very licence required to drive legally.
Transport officials reiterated that applicants must ensure they comply with licensing rules and should be accompanied by a properly licensed driver if they are still in the process of obtaining a learner's permit.
