
Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala has been witnessing the heaviest amount of rain of this monsoon season as incessant fury of rain affecting normal lives in many parts of the state. It has been raining without a respite for days in North Kerala causing widespread damages. According to IMD, the districts which received more rains during this latest spell are Thrissur, Idukki and Kozhikode. IMD has has predicted that heavy rain will continue in North Kerala for a few more days. Considering the situation, IMD has issued orange alerts in Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod.
Heavy rains will continue till August 3 due to low pressure likely to form in Bay of Bengal on 19th, IMD sources said. In the coming days, Idukki and Central Kerala would receive more rains, they said.
Six deaths in one day
As rain continues to lash out leaving normal lives out of gear, six people died in various rain related incidents across the state. O Molly (42) , wife of Satheesan of Tholikkode Parappara, who was travelling in a car died as a banyan tree fell on top of the car in which she was travelling. The incident took place Aaramkallu, near Vazhayila on the Perurukada-Nedumangad road, Thiruvananthapuram around 7.30 pm. Her friend, who was driving the car, is undergoing treatment at the Medical College Hospital.Molly was trapped in the completely broken car for a long time.
On hearing about the incident, fire and rescue team and police from Thiruvananthapuram and Nedumangad reached the spot, cut the branches of the tree, broke open the damaged car and took out Molly. Though she was rushed to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital, her life could not be saved. Molly has two children, Abhiram and Adwaith.
At Kannambra near Vadakkancheri, a mother and son sleeping inside their house died as the wall of the house collapsed down. The deceased are identified as Sulochana (54) and her son (Ranjith).
At Pathanamthitta, TC Reji (49) of Mepral, found dead electrocuted in a large puddle formed in the rain in front of a church near his house.
In Wayanad, Sudhan (32) of Cheeyambam, died as he was electrocuted from a broken electric line. At Mahe, Thazhe Kuniyil Chandrasekharan (62) of Olavilam, drowned as he fell into a canal near the road at Olavilam.
More than thousand electric poles damaged
According to Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB), more than a thousand electric poles were collapsed during the heavy rain that has been battering the state. They also have informed that many transformers too were damaged. It is said that the board has already suffered lakhs of rupees due to the damages suffered in this recent furious spell of rain.
Following heavy landslips, 220 KV feeders of Idukki-Lower Periyar 1, 2 and Lower Periyar Brahmapuram 1 have been switched off. All the three generators under the project have been functioning in full capacity. Transmission of electricity is being done through other feeders.
Since it is raining heavily, people should be very vigilant while dealing with electricity , the department cautioned. If people notice any accident or danger, they should immediately call the emergency number 9496010101. Complaints related to power failure should be reported to the customer care number 1912. Also, complaints can be lodged on the mobile number 9496001912 by calling or through WhatsApp.
