Thrissur: The India Meteorological Department has forecast widespread rainfall across Kerala on May 25, with authorities warning of strong winds, possible landslides and soil erosion in vulnerable regions.

Yellow alerts have been issued in nine districts as weather conditions continue to remain unstable amid intensified monsoon activity.

Officials have advised residents in hilly and landslide-prone areas to remain cautious and follow safety instructions issued by district administrations.

Traffic completely banned on Athirappilly-Malakkapara route

Amid heavy rain conditions and ongoing road renovation work, authorities have imposed strict traffic restrictions on the Athirappilly-Malakkapara interstate highway.

A temporary complete ban on vehicle movement has been enforced on the route connecting Kerala and Tamil Nadu through the forest stretch.

Officials stated that:

  • Vehicles arriving from Tamil Nadu through Pollachi and Valparai will be stopped at the Malakkapara check post
  • Vehicles travelling from Chalakkudy and Athirappilly towards Malakkapara and Valparai will be stopped at the Vazhachal check post
  • No vehicles will be permitted to enter the forest route from either side until further notice.
  • Tourists and travellers advised to avoid forest route
  • Authorities have requested tourists and regular travellers to avoid the Athirappilly-Malakkapara forest road until the construction and repair work is completed.
  • Passengers travelling between Tamil Nadu and Kerala, particularly towards Thrissur and Ernakulam, have been advised to use alternative routes through the Palakkad-Mannuthy National Highway (NH 544).

The restrictions are expected to remain in place until road conditions improve and ongoing maintenance work is completed safely.

Authorities warn of landslides and soil erosion

With heavy rain expected to continue in several parts of the state, disaster management authorities have warned about the possibility of:

  • Landslides in hilly areas
  • Soil erosion near vulnerable slopes
  • Waterlogging in low-lying regions
  • Falling trees and reduced visibility due to strong winds

People living near rivers, hillsides and forest areas have been asked to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel during intense rainfall periods.

Officials have appealed for public cooperation with the temporary traffic restrictions and weather-related advisories to ensure safety during the ongoing rain spell.

Tourism and transport authorities are closely monitoring the situation as Kerala enters an active monsoon phase.
