The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted rainfall in Kerala on Wednesday, with a yellow alert issued for two districts—Malappuram and Wayanad. Isolated heavy showers are expected in these regions. Heavy rain is classified as rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours.

Additionally, light rainfall is also expected in isolated areas of Idukki and Ernakulam districts in the coming hours, according to the IMD. 

IMD issues thunderstorm warning

The IMD has reiterated its warning of heavy rain with thunderstorms in Kerala today. As a result, a yellow alert has been issued in Malappuram and Wayanad. Similar to the previous warning, heavy rain is classified as precipitation between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours.

Fishing ban and strong wind advisory

Fishing is prohibited along the Kerala-Lakshadweep coast today on March 12, 2025, due to expected rough weather conditions. Strong winds with speeds ranging between 35 to 45 km/h, occasionally reaching up to 55 km/h, are forecast along the southern Kerala coast and the Lakshadweep region. Similarly, strong winds of 35 to 45 km/h, with gusts up to 55 km/h, are anticipated along the southern Tamil Nadu coast, Kanyakumari region, Gulf of Mannar, and Maldives, potentially leading to adverse weather conditions in these areas.

Rising temperatures across Kerala

Meanwhile, the heatwave warning remains in place across the state, with temperatures expected to increase by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in all districts. 

Expected maximum temperatures in different districts:

  • Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasaragod – up to 38°C
  • Malappuram, Ernakulam – up to 37°C
  • Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Alappuzha – up to 35°C
  • Wayanad, Kollam – up to 34°C
  • Thiruvananthapuram – up to 33°C
  • Idukki – up to 32°C
