Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of widespread weather changes across Kerala over the next five days due to developing low-pressure areas and cyclonic circulation over nearby regions.

According to the IMD, a low-pressure system has formed over Saurashtra-Kutch and the adjoining northeast Arabian Sea. Meanwhile, a cyclonic circulation is present over southwest Bangladesh and Gangetic West Bengal. This is expected to intensify into a low-pressure area over the north Bay of Bengal and the adjoining coastal regions of Bangladesh and West Bengal within 48 hours.

As a result, Kerala is likely to experience widespread rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms for the next five days. The IMD has also warned of strong surface winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph in isolated parts of the state today.

In response, fishing has been prohibited along the Kerala-Karnataka-Lakshadweep coasts due to rough sea conditions.

District alerts issued

An orange alert has been issued in seven districts due to the risk of very heavy rainfall — between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm in 24 hours:

Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Wayanad

A yellow alert has also been declared in seven other districts where isolated heavy rainfall (between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm) is expected:

Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasaragod

The IMD further noted the possibility of rain accompanied by thunderstorms across many parts of the state during this period.

Residents are advised to remain cautious, especially in hilly and low-lying regions vulnerable to flooding or landslides. Authorities are monitoring developments closely and may issue updated advisories depending on how the weather systems evolve.
