Thrissur: The Kerala government has announced plans to start night-time post-mortem examinations at its government medical colleges. This move aims to improve the efficiency and availability of forensic services across the state.

In a recent directive, the Director of Health Education has instructed the principals of government medical colleges to begin night-time post-mortems using existing facilities. The letter requests that these institutions provide updates on the measures they have taken and the required staffing information.

However, the implementation of night-time post-mortem examinations faces a major challenge due to a shortage of forensic surgeons. Currently, there is a deficit of 16 surgeons, making it difficult to start the night-time service as planned. The government will need to address this shortage to ensure the successful rollout of the new post-mortem schedule.
