The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday said that Kerala will get rainfall for the next five days. Yellow alerts have been issued for several districts.

Districts under yellow alert

On October 8 (Wednesday), Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Kozhikode, and Wayanad are under yellow alert.

On October 9 (Thursday), the alert is for Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Palakkad, and Malappuram.

On October 10, Palakkad, Malappuram, Wayanad, and Kannur will be under the alert.

Finally, on October 11, Palakkad and Malappuram will remain under yellow alert.

According to the IMD, some areas in these districts may get heavy rainfall, which means rain between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm in 24 hours. Light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are also likely in many areas of Kerala till October 13.

Why Kerala is getting rain

The IMD said that several weather systems are causing the rain in Kerala.

The cyclone “Shakthi” over the Arabian Sea has weakened into a depression. It was last located near 19.0°N and 60.5°E, around 250 km southeast of Masirah in Oman. It is expected to weaken further into a low-pressure area in the next 12 hours.

A Western Disturbance lies over North Rajasthan and Haryana, bringing moisture from the Arabian Sea towards the Western Himalayas.

There are cyclonic circulations over northeast Jharkhand and northeast Assam, and a trough from north coastal Odisha to east Telangana, which also contribute to rainfall.

Another cyclonic circulation is over south Bangladesh, and one more lies over the southwest Bay of Bengal near Tamil Nadu, with a trough extending to coastal Karnataka.

These combined systems are expected to bring continued rain across Kerala in the coming days, the IMD said.
