Kottayam: Ration dealers in Kerala have announced an indefinite strike starting on January 27. The strike is being organised to demand a revision of the wage package, monthly distribution of commission and incentives, an end to central neglect and the cancellation of the proposed move to limit ration distribution to the BPL priority category.

At a press conference, Joint Action Committee General Convener Johnny Nellore outlined several key demands, including the revision of the 2018 wage package, which dealers say is insufficient.

Johnny Nellore emphasised the hardship faced by ration dealers, noting that after covering the running costs of their shops, there is little money left to cover daily expenses. He also demanded that the government ensure ration dealers receive the income of last grade employees and allow them to distribute daily necessities through ration shops.

Financial strain, impending closures

Dealers have expressed concern over the financial difficulties resulting from the current wage package. Many dealers are considering leaving the business due to these ongoing financial challenges. According to them, the wage package implemented in 2018 is meager. The package was promised to be reviewed after six months, but no such revision has been made, they said.
