IMD has issued a yellow alert for nine districts in Kerala on Friday, October 9, and four districts on Saturday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for nine districts in Kerala on Friday, October 9, and four districts on Saturday, October 10, 2026, forecasting the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall.
According to the IMD's forecast, the following districts are under a yellow alert for isolated heavy rainfall:
Friday, October 9: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Kozhikode and Wayanad.
Saturday, October 10: Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki.
The department has forecast isolated heavy rainfall in these districts. Heavy rainfall refers to precipitation ranging from 64.5mm to 115.5mm within 24 hours.
Will schools and colleges remain closed on Saturday?
The possibility of heavy rain has prompted questions about whether schools and colleges in the affected districts will declare a holiday on Saturday, October 10.
However, the yellow alert alone does not warrant the closure of educational institutions. Any decision will depend on the prevailing weather conditions and the assessment of the district administration.
A holiday must be confirmed through an official order issued by the district collector or another competent authority. Students, parents and guardians should therefore check announcements from the respective district administrations and educational institutions before making any decisions.
October 10 falls on the second Saturday of the month, when some schools and colleges may already be closed under their regular weekly holiday schedules.
However, the existing holiday arrangements can vary between institutions. Students and parents should confirm the schedule with their respective schools or colleges rather than assume that all educational institutions will remain closed.
For the latest updates, they should rely on official announcements and avoid forwarding unverified social media messages about weather-related holidays.
