The IMD issued yellow alerts for several districts in Kerala in its Friday afternoon bulletin. The alerts are spread across three days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall in isolated parts of Kerala from November 1 to 3, following the formation of a low-pressure area over the South Andaman Sea.
In its weather bulletin issued on Friday (October 30), the IMD warned of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds alongside the rainfall. It has issued yellow alerts for several districts on different days during the three-day period.
The forecast comes as a weather system over the Bay of Bengal is expected to strengthen and move towards the Andhra Pradesh coast.
Kerala weather forecast: Heavy rain expected from November 1
According to the IMD, isolated places in Kerala are likely to receive heavy rainfall between November 1 and 3. Rainfall could reach 7 cm to 11 cm within 24 hours in the affected areas.
Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds with speeds of 30 to 40 km/h are also likely.
The IMD classifies rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm in 24 hours as heavy rainfall. Residents in the districts under alert have been advised to follow official weather updates and take necessary precautions.
Kerala district-wise yellow alert list
The IMD issued yellow alerts for several districts in Kerala in its Friday afternoon bulletin. The alerts are spread across three days.
- Sunday, November 1: Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Idukki.
- Monday, November 2: Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram and Wayanad.
- Tuesday, November 3: Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur.
Residents in these districts should monitor the latest weather bulletins, particularly if thunderstorms and strong winds affect their areas.
Bay of Bengal low-pressure area likely to strengthen
The weather system responsible for the changing conditions is currently located over the South Andaman Sea and adjoining parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The IMD expects it to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression by Saturday (October 31). The system is likely to be positioned over the southeast Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea and adjoining island regions.
It is then expected to move towards the Andhra Pradesh coast over the following two days.
Meanwhile, the remnants of Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Arnab continue to persist as a low-pressure area over northern Chhattisgarh and adjoining eastern Madhya Pradesh.
Kerala school holiday: Will schools and colleges close?
There is no indication of school or college holidays in Kerala on Saturday (October 31) based on the yellow alerts listed in the IMD bulletin. No district has been included in the alert list for that day.
However, weather conditions can change. If the IMD issues fresh alerts for heavy or very heavy rainfall, the authorities concerned may review the situation and announce closures where necessary.
Any holiday declaration will depend on an official order issued by the respective district collector or another competent authority.
Parents and students should check announcements from district administrations and their educational institutions before deciding whether to attend classes.
People planning to travel should also follow official weather updates, particularly if their routes pass through areas forecast to receive heavy rainfall.
