Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather warning for Kerala, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall across various districts over the next five days. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant as several regions are placed under orange and yellow alerts.

Orange alert (Very heavy rainfall: 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm)

  • 15/05/2026: Idukki and Malappuram.

Yellow alert (Heavy Rainfall: 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm)

  • 15/05/2026: Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod.
  • 16/05/2026: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, and Ernakulam.
  • 17/05/2026: Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod.

Safety guidelines for the public

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has issued the following safety instructions:

  • Those living in landslide-prone, soil erosion-prone or flood-prone areas must move to safer locations or relief camps as directed by authorities.
  • Strictly avoid crossing rivers, bathing or fishing in water bodies during heavy rains. Do not stand on bridges to watch the water flow or take selfies.
  • Avoid non-essential travel, especially to hilly regions, waterfalls and coastal areas, until the weather warning is lifted.
  • High winds are expected. Residents in weak or unfortified houses should take extra precautions and relocate if necessary.
