The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow alerts for several districts in Kerala over the next five days, warning of possible isolated heavy rainfall.

  • October 9 (Thursday): Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Malappuram, Wayanad, Kannur
  • October 10 (Friday): Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur
  • October 11 (Saturday) & October 12 (Sunday): Palakkad, Malappuram

Heavy rain is defined as 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm in 24 hours, meaning some areas could see significant downpours.

Kerala can also expect light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms in the coming days. The IMD warned that isolated heavy showers could bring winds of 30–40 km per hour, particularly in vulnerable areas.

Why the rain is coming

According to the IMD, a low-pressure system over the central southwest Arabian Sea is moving east-southeast and is expected to weaken within 12 hours.

A cyclonic circulation is present over Kanyakumari and nearby regions at 1.5 km above sea level. Another cyclonic system may develop over the north Bay of Bengal by October 10 (Friday), adding to rainfall chances in the region.
