The Kerala Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) has used a viral internet meme to warn motorcyclists about a risky habit: placing a mobile phone inside a helmet to talk while riding.

The department used the popular “Technologia” meme format — widely seen on social media platforms— to highlight the behaviour and draw attention to its safety risks.

“Technologia” video memes usually use a deep, synthesised voice saying “technologia” to jokingly show futuristic or exaggerated technology. In this case, however, the MVD used the meme to highlight what it sees as a dangerous misuse of “technology” on the road.

Viral meme highlights risky riding habit

The department’s post focuses on a practice seen among some motorcyclists: wedging a mobile phone between the ear and the padding inside a helmet while riding.

Some riders treat this as a simple hands-free solution that allows them to stay connected while on the road.

The MVD, however, describes it as a “low-effort” form of technology. By using the “Technologia” meme label ironically, the department highlights how unsafe and impractical the method actually is.

Through humour and satire, the post draws attention to the gap between what riders think is clever and what the department considers dangerous.

Phone conversations divide attention

The main concern raised by the MVD is cognitive distraction.

When riders talk on the phone while riding, their attention is divided between the conversation and controlling the motorcycle. This split focus reduces their ability to react quickly to traffic or road conditions.

According to the department, even if the phone is not held in the hand, the conversation itself can affect concentration and riding control.

Misconceptions among riders

The MVD noted that many riders — regardless of gender — believe they are being smart by using such methods.

Some wedge a phone inside the helmet, while others try to appear “extra clever” by hiding a Bluetooth headset inside the ear and covering it with the helmet — giving the impression of hands-free riding.

The department stressed that such practices can still distract riders and create serious risks on the road.

It added that the behaviour does not only endanger the rider but also other road users. Through the meme, the department mocks the “extreme cleverness” of such riders, pointing out that many fail to realise how much their safety is compromised by this distraction.
