Kochi: Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar’s official motorcade has been reduced from nine vehicles to six, following a decision by the Lok Bhavan in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for fuel conservation and reduced fuel consumption across government operations. The move trims the convoy by one-third and is expected to be implemented during all official engagements, including the new CM swearing-in ceremony.

According to official details, the reduction includes the removal of one escort vehicle and two standby vehicles. The revised protocol now brings down the Governor’s convoy strength from nine to six vehicles.

The decision is part of a broader push to promote fuel efficiency and reduce unnecessary fuel usage in government logistics. Officials indicated that similar cost- and fuel-saving measures are being encouraged across administrative systems.

The initiative also aligns with recent steps taken at the national level, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been promoting reduced convoy sizes and fuel-efficient practices. The Prime Minister had earlier reduced the size of his own motorcade and introduced electric pilot vehicles as part of sustainability efforts.

Following this trend, several states have also begun adopting similar measures. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister had previously reduced the number of security and escort vehicles in his convoy. At the institutional level as well, the Supreme Court has expanded digital hearings and encouraged carpooling practices to reduce logistical and environmental impact.
