Prem Kumar says he learned of his removal from media reports, expressing admiration for successor Resul Pookutty and satisfaction over his tenure.

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government’s removal of actor Prem Kumar from his position as interim chairperson of the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy has drawn attention. The decision sparked criticism on social media, with users alleging that the move was politically motivated.
There were claims that he was removed for expressing support for the ASHA workers’ strike. Some reports suggested that the decision followed dissatisfaction within the ruling CPM. The party had reportedly instructed cultural figures to join the campaign for the Nilambur bypoll, but Prem Kumar allegedly ignored the directive, leading to discontent.
Following this, Prem Kumar stayed away from the ceremony where Oscar-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty formally assumed charge as the new chairman. The event, held without prior public announcement, reportedly surprised even members of the Academy.
However, Prem Kumar on Sunday clarified to Mathrubhumi News about his removal and other developments.
“It’s the government’s decision; it can make any decision. The 30th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) is approaching, and it’s one of the most important festivals in the world. An internationally renowned person, Resul Pookutty, whom I deeply admire, has now taken charge. My only regret is that I did not receive an official invitation when he assumed office. Otherwise, I would certainly have attended," he said.
"Malayalam cinema began in the era of silent films, and now an Oscar-winning pioneer in sound has taken over; it’s symbolic. I just wish I could have been present on that occasion. Apart from that, I have no issues. Since it was the government that entrusted me with this responsibility, I believe I did full justice to the post and the duties assigned to me," he remarked.
Prem Kumar added that he had not supported the ASHA strike and was unaware of any political reasons behind his removal.
He had been serving as chairperson during the release of the Hema Committee report and the ensuing controversies surrounding the Malayalam film industry. The state’s Minister for Culture had earlier praised his work and the smooth coordination of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK). However, his removal raised questions, to which Culture Minister Saji Cherian said the decision was merely a routine administrative move.
The government order appointing the new governing body was issued on Friday. Resul Pookutty has taken over as chairman, with Kukku Parameswaran as vice-chairperson. C Ajoy will continue as secretary.
