Thiruvananthapuram: A growing internal tussle within the Kerala Congress over the Chief Minister post has escalated ahead of the May 4 Assembly Election 2026 results, creating unease within the United Democratic Front (UDF) and prompting intervention from the party high command.

The emerging leadership contest has also raised concerns within the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), a key UDF ally, which is closely monitoring the situation amid fears of coalition instability.

IUML expresses concern over public infighting

Sources indicate that IUML leaders are unhappy with the public sparring within the Congress, believing it could damage the credibility of the UDF alliance ahead of a crucial political phase.

The party is said to be considering seeking intervention from the Congress high command if internal rivalries continue to play out publicly.

For now, the IUML has chosen to remain neutral, stating it will express its position only if formally consulted.

CM aspirants emerge within Kerala Congress

Within the Kerala Congress, several senior leaders have emerged as contenders for the Chief Minister post, including:

  • V D Satheesan
  • Ramesh Chennithala
  • K C Venugopal

Supporters of these leaders have reportedly engaged in a social media campaign, intensifying internal factionalism and drawing criticism from senior party members.

Veteran MP M K Raghavan questioned the timing of the debate, calling it unnecessary ahead of the official counting of votes.

AICC steps in to contain factional politics

Alarmed by the growing infighting, the Congress high command has stepped in to restore discipline.

AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge has held consultations with Kerala leaders, while the All India Congress Committee (AICC) has issued strict instructions banning public discussion on the Chief Minister selection until results are declared.

KPCC leadership and AICC Kerala in-charge Deepa Das Munshi have reinforced the directive to prevent further escalation.

High command to take the final call after the results

Despite the official warnings, informal lobbying continues within party circles, including discussions in Delhi-based leadership networks.

However, the Congress central leadership has made it clear that the final decision on the Chief Minister will be taken only after:

  • Election results are declared on May 4
  • Newly elected MLAs are consulted
  • High command representatives assess ground feedback in Kerala

This process is aimed at containing factionalism and presenting a united front within the UDF.

Political optics ahead of crucial verdict

The presence of Ramesh Chennithala in Delhi ahead of the results triggered political speculation, although he dismissed any connection to the CM race discussions.

The ongoing Kerala Congress leadership tussle is being closely watched as it could significantly impact post-poll coalition dynamics in the state.
