Thiruvananthapuram: Today marks Karkidaka Vavu, the sacred new moon day when thousands across Kerala observe Vavubali, a ritual offering for the salvation of ancestors.

Temples across the state witnessed massive gatherings from early morning on Thursday. At Papanasam in Varkala, known as ‘Dakshina Kashi’, the rituals began as early as 2.30 am. Devotees performed Thilahomam after a ritual bath in Chakratheerthakulam. The Janardhanaswamy Temple opened at 3 am, with over 100 licensed priests guiding the ceremonies. Infrastructure was set up to accommodate over a thousand people simultaneously. Security was tight with the presence of lifeguards, a scuba team, and more than 500 police personnel.

In Kollam, ancestral rites were held at Thirumullavaram, Mundakkal Papanasanam, and Ashtamudi, drawing crowds from Wednesday night. The rituals continue until Thursday evening. Temporary shelters were erected by the Travancore Devaswom Board and Hindu organisations. Arrangements for Thilahomam, ticketing, and crowd control were made at key locations.

Similar ceremonies unfolded in Pathanapuram, Punalur, and across northern Kerala, especially at Thirunavaya, where the sacred Trimurti Sangam drew thousands. Tents, CCTV surveillance, police deployment, and volunteer support helped maintain order. Devotees were served free meals.

Despite rain alerts, authorities ensured smooth conduct with necessary precautions. Undeterred by weather conditions, the devout turned out in large numbers, offering solemn prayers for ancestral peace and the well-being of generations ahead.
