Kannur: The price of jail-made food products sold under the Freedom Food brand has been increased. The price of chicken biryani has gone up from ₹70 to ₹80, vegetable biryani from ₹45 to ₹50, and rice meals from ₹40 to ₹45. Prices of other products remain unchanged.

Chicken biryani and chapatis are the most sought-after items among jail-made products. The revised prices came into effect on June 5. Prison superintendents had written to the government a year ago seeking a price revision, citing rising costs of raw materials. Prison food continues to enjoy strong demand due to its affordability and quality.

7,82,000 Chapatis every month

On average, 7.82 lakh chapatis are prepared in prisons and supplied to the market every month. Popular items include chapatis, biryani, vegetable curry, egg curry, chicken curry, chicken kebab, chicken chilli, fried banana chips, chocolates, and laddus.

Prison products are available at the newly opened prison café near the Central Jail in Kannur, two counters in front of the jail, and outlets at the bus stands in Taliparamba, Thalassery, Koothuparamba, and the old bus stand in Kannur.
