Passengers flying out of Kannur International Airport can now buy the popular low-cost food items prepared by Kannur Central Jail, with prison authorities expanding sales through a new mobile counter at the airport. Known for its affordable prices and quality food, the jail kitchen’s products have already gained strong public demand across Kerala.

The airport counter, operating daily from 12 pm to 1.30 pm, serves a range of dishes including chapati, chicken biryani, chilli chicken, chicken kebab, chicken curry, egg curry, vegetable curry, laddus and banana chips. After airport operations, the mobile counter shifts to Mattannur bus stand and continues sales till 6 pm.

Officials said many international travellers are also buying the jail-made laddus and chips before flying abroad, helping the products gain attention beyond Kerala.

One of the biggest attractions remains the pricing. Ten chapatis are priced at just Rs 30, while chicken biryani costs Rs 70. Vegetable biryani is available for Rs 45, chicken curry for Rs 30 and egg curry for Rs 20.

Snacks and sweets are also witnessing strong demand. Jail-made laddu is sold at Rs 200 per kilogram, banana chips at Rs 165 for 500 grams and chocolates at Rs 60 for 100 grams. Chicken kebab and chilli chicken are priced at Rs 80.

Superintendent K. Venu said the food items prepared at the central jail have received strong public acceptance over the years.

The prison department also expects the expanded sales network to strengthen rehabilitation initiatives for inmates by creating more work opportunities and skill-based activities inside the jail system.
