Kannur: Senior Congress leader K. Sudhakaran is likely to go ahead with filing his nomination from the Kannur Assembly constituency for the upcoming elections in the state, according to media reports on Wednesday.

Sources indicate that the veteran leader has initiated steps to secure a Non-Liability Certificate (NLC), a document generally required to complete the nomination formalities, from the Kerala House. Meanwhile, his candidacy is understood to be under consideration by the party high command, with announcements for other contested seats still pending.

Amid the ongoing tussle over the seat, Congress leadership has stepped in to pacify Sudhakaran. Party general secretary KC Venugopal is learnt to have met him at his residence late Tuesday night, where the two held detailed discussions. Venugopal reportedly urged him to avoid taking any drastic decisions.

However, Sudhakaran is said to be firm on contesting the seat and has not softened his stance despite repeated attempts by senior leaders to persuade him otherwise. He is expected to publicly announce his decision later on Wednesday.

Sudhakaran had travelled to New Delhi earlier to hold discussions with senior leader Rahul Gandhi.

The Congress on Tuesday released its first list of candidates for the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections, announcing nominees in 55 of the 92 seats it is contesting after days of internal discussions.

The list, cleared by the party's Central Election Committee, includes 19 sitting MLAs and reflects a mix of senior leaders, organisational figures and new faces. Constituencies where discussions are still ongoing have been left out in this phase.

Key seats such as Aranmula and Chengannur have not been included in the first list. Kannur and Konni also remain undecided, keeping suspense over the possible entry of MPs into the Assembly fray.

Despite indications of interest from senior leaders, no MPs have been fielded in the first phase.
