New Delhi: Reports are emerging that senior Congress leader and Kannur MP K. Sudhakaran may form a new political party to contest the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections, following the high command’s decision to bar sitting MPs from contesting.

The Congress leadership had recently taken a firm stand against allowing MPs to enter the fray for the state polls, effectively blocking both Sudhakaran and Attingal MP Adoor Prakash from being fielded. The move reportedly caused delays in the release of the party’s second list of candidates.

Sudhakaran had insisted on contesting from the Kannur constituency, while Prakash was seeking a ticket from Konni. However, the party leadership made it clear that no sitting MPs would be given tickets. Former Kannur corporation mayor T.O. Mohanan is now likely to be the Congress candidate for Kannur, while Satheesh Kochuparambil is expected to contest from Konni.

Sources suggest that Sudhakaran remained firm in his demand during discussions with senior leaders, including Congress general secretary K.C. Venugopal. His reported decision to consider forming a new party could have political repercussions in the Malabar region and across Kerala.
