The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a yellow alert of above-normal maximum temperature in eight districts. 

According to IMD, the maximum temperature is likely to be around 38°C in Palakkad, and 37 °C in Kollam, Alappuzha, Kozhikode, and Kannur districts on Monday and Tuesday. 

Similarly, the maximum temperature in Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Thrissur districts on Monday and Tuesday is likely to be around 36°C. 

These districts are likely to witness 2°C to 3°C above normal temperature on the two days, said the IMD bulletin.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has also urged citizens to take precautions in the wake of the same. It has issued warnings and tips. Some of the major ones are: 

  • Do not expose your body to sunlight between 11 am and 3 pm.
  • Drink plenty of clean water. Even if you don't feel thirsty, continue to stay hydrated.
  • Refrain from consuming beverages like alcohol, coffee, tea, carbonated soft drinks, and similar drinks during the daytime.
  • Wear loose, cotton cloths.
  • Use footwear when stepping outside. Using a hat or umbrella is advisable.
  • Include a variety of fruits and vegetables in your diet.
  • Ensure proper waste disposal to prevent the chance of fire in areas such as markets, construction sites, and dump yards. Conduct fire audits and prioritize safety measures.
  • In hot conditions, there is a risk of wildfires. Those residing near forests and recreational travelers should exercise caution. Avoid situations that may lead to wildfires. Adhere to forest department guidelines.
  • Media professionals and police officers working from 11 am to 3 pm should take precautions to avoid heat exposure. 
  • Workers in labor-intensive jobs, such as construction workers, farmers, and other physically demanding occupations, should organize their work schedules to avoid peak heat hours.
  • Do not leave pets or livestock unattended during hot weather. Provide ample water for them.
  • People experiencing health issues should seek medical attention promptly and take the necessary breaks for rest.
