Idukki: Idukki District Congress Committee (DCC) chief C P Mathew has been accused of making objectionable remarks about a woman party worker during a campaign meeting for the United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate Roy K Paulose in the Idukki constituency.

According to reports, the comments were made during a recent public speech where Mathew referred to a past protest involving a woman vice president of a village panchayat.

Allegations linked to past protest reference

In his speech, Mathew allegedly claimed that the woman had been instructed by him to tear her blouse as part of a protest strategy aimed at politically targeting rivals. He also reportedly made references to the woman’s tribal (Adivasi) background and suggested that certain legal provisions could be invoked in such a context.

The remarks, as seen in circulating visuals, appeared to draw reactions from those present, with several leaders reportedly seen smiling during the speech.

The incident has triggered attention in the political circles of Kerala, especially with Assembly elections scheduled across the state on April 9. However, the Congress leadership has not yet issued an official response regarding the controversy.

The episode has added to the political discourse in the state, where campaign rhetoric and conduct of leaders are under close scrutiny ahead of polling.

With elections approaching, the controversy surrounding the remarks has placed additional focus on political accountability and campaign conduct, awaiting further clarification from party leadership.
