Thiruvananthapuram: In a massive relief for the public, Kerala Electricity Minister K. Krishnankutty informed that the subsidy will continue for consumers who use up to 120 units of electricity per month.

The move comes just a day after the Kerala government declared its plan to discontinue power bill subsidies in conjunction with the State Electricity Regulatory Commission's (KSERC) decision to hike electricity tariffs.

The move, however, drew severe criticism from the public because it directly impacted almost 90 lakh consumers. Krishnankutty said that the subsidy will continue for those who consume up to 120 units of electricity per month.

The government offered a subsidy of Rs 44 to those who consume up to 120 units of electricity per month.

The government is now taking a defensive stance by saying that there was no order issued to remove the subsidy. However, the government had already issued a notification to collect electricity tariffs from KSEB. At the same time, it is unclear how the government will find the money to continue the subsidy.
