Wayanad: The Indian Army has completed the construction of a Bailey bridge connecting the landslide-affected Mundakai and Chooralmala regions. The construction, which commenced on Wednesday under challenging conditions, saw its first vehicle pass through the bridge on Thursday around 5:50 p.m. Later, military vehicles and JCBs were also able to cross the bridge.
The newly constructed bridge, facilitated by the Army's Madras Engineer Group (MEG), is a crucial development aiding rescue and search operations. Its completion is expected to accelerate efforts in recovering the remains of those who perished in the disaster.
Mundakai had been cut off after its previous bridge was swept away by the landslide. The new Bailey bridge, capable of supporting up to 24 tonnes, was constructed in Wayanad after materials were airlifted from Delhi using the Indian Air Force's Globemaster aircraft. The materials initially landed at Kannur airport and were then transported by 17 lorries to the construction site.
Earlier attempts to establish connectivity included a temporary bridge built by the army, which unfortunately was submerged due to rising river levels.
