Thiruvananthapuram: In the gruesome death of five members of a family in the wee hours of Tuesday at Varkala in Thiruvananthapuram, reports have emerged that rescue operation conducted by fire and rescue personnel and locals was delayed due to the presence of remote-controlled gate and pet dog on the premises.
Though locals tried to intervene after seeing fire and smoke emanating from the house, they could not open the gate easily as it was a remote-controlled one. Likewise, their attempt to get inside the house premises by climbing the wall was not possible due to the presence of dog.

MLA V Joy, talking to Mathrubhumi News, said that the neighbours tried all possible ways to stop the fire from spreading by pouring water from the exteriors of the compound. The police and fire force who rushed to the spot broke open the gate and rescue operations began in full swing.
The fire engulfed the house by the time police and fire personnel reached there. The incident happened at around 2 am and it was the neighbours who saw the fire fire. They immediately informed the concerned authorities.
Householder Prathapan, (64), his wife Sherly (53), younger son Akhil (25), elder son’s wife Abhirami (24) and eight-month-old grandchild Rayan succumbed to fire injuries. Meanwhile, the sole surviour, Nikhil, is hospitalized and his condition is critical.
