Thiruvananthapuram: R Bindu, a Dalit domestic worker, who was allegedly framed in a false theft case, has approached the court against the house owner, her daughter, and police personnel from the Peroorkada police station involved in the incident. The action came on the basis of Bindu’s complaint and the directive of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Commission.

Those named in the case are her employer Omana Daniel, a resident of Ambalamukku, her daughter Nisha, Sub-Inspector S J Prasad and Assistant Sub-Inspector Prasannakumar of the Peroorkada police station. Bindu had lodged a complaint at the station on Saturday, citing severe mental harassment in police custody over a fabricated allegation. As per the complaint, the officers involved have been placed under suspension.

Bindu was falsely accused of stealing a gold chain. Although the ornament had gone missing on April 18, Omana Daniel only filed the police complaint five days later, on April 23. Without notifying her or her family, police took Bindu into custody and held her overnight at the station. She was kept in illegal detention until 12 noon the next day and subjected to intense mental harassment, allegedly at the hands of the SI and ASI.

The case drew wide attention, prompting an internal inquiry by the Cantonment Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP). The investigation found that the officers had overstepped their authority and acted inappropriately.
