Thiruvananthapuram: In a serious poll code violation during the ongoing assembly elections, a UDF booth agent was taken into custody after allegedly entering a polling booth wearing eyeglasses fitted with a camera in Kasaragod’s Udma.
The individual, identified as DM Jamal, was apprehended by the election squad after officials detected the device during polling hours.
The incident happened at Booth No. 165 at Bekal Islamia ALP School, where LDF workers raised objections after noticing that the glasses worn by Jamal had a camera.
Jamal, however, claimed that it was his regular pair of eyeglasses and that he was unaware of any camera fitted in it. Following the protest, the presiding officer and police intervened and seized the glasses.
Meanwhile, Kerala recorded a voter turnout of 33.28 per cent by 11 am in the ongoing Assembly elections, according to data released by the Election Commission of India.
Polling, which began at 7 am, witnessed a steady rise from the early hours, with turnout at 16.23 per cent recorded by 9 am.
In the high-stakes election, over 2.6 crore electors are set to decide the fate of 883 candidates across 140 constituencies in the state. Of the 2,69,53,644 registered voters, 1,38,27,319 are women, and 1,31,26,048 are men, while 277 voters belong to the third gender category.
The electorate includes nearly 4,24,518 voters in the 18–19 age group, alongside 2,04,608 voters aged 85 years and above, highlighting a wide demographic spread.
To ensure smooth and secure polling, authorities have set up 30,471 polling stations across the state.
The election is being keenly watched as the Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF seeks a historic third consecutive term, while the Congress-led UDF is aiming to return to power amid anti-incumbency trends.
