Kerala recorded 3,875 road deaths and over 48,000 accidents in 2024, with Ernakulam reporting the highest fatalities. Two-wheelers accounted for the majority of deaths, says State Crime Records Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram: The State Crime Records Bureau has released a detailed report on road accidents in Kerala, revealing alarming statistics from the past year. In 2024, the state recorded 48,841 accidents, resulting in 3,875 fatalities and thousands of injuries.
Among those killed, two-wheeler riders accounted for the highest number of deaths, with 1,470 victims. Car accidents claimed the lives of 820 passengers. The police reported 13,415 motorcycle crashes, which led to 1,088 deaths, while 5,586 scooter accidents resulted in 382 fatalities. In 14,550 car accidents, 820 people lost their lives.
The report also highlighted that 12 people were killed in 92 hit-and-run cases involving unidentified vehicles. Additionally, three deaths were reported in accidents involving road rollers.
A total of 38,153 people sustained serious injuries, while 16,660 suffered minor injuries across the state during the year.
Ernakulam district records maximum road deaths
Ernakulam district recorded the highest number of road accidents and fatalities in Kerala last year. Of the 7,567 accidents reported, 489 people lost their lives. Thiruvananthapuram followed closely, with 484 deaths from 5,772 accidents. In Kozhikode, 315 fatalities were reported from a total of 4,904 accidents.
885 fatalities reported on National Highways
A total of 885 people lost their lives in accidents on national highways across Kerala. State highways accounted for 870 fatalities, while 2,120 deaths occurred on roads managed by the Public Works Department and local bodies.
