Perambra: Electricity generation under KSEB’s Kuttiyadi hydroelectric project has taken a hit as the water level in the Kakkayam dam decreased considerably. Currently, the water level in the reservoir stands at 29 percent. If the region does not receive rainfall in the coming days, the situation is going to be even worse. It should be noted that in August last year, the dam shutters had to be opened owing to the incessant rains. However, this year the water level in the reservoir is nowhere close to its full capacity.

By usual standards, 5 million units of electricity is produced every 24 hours at the Kakkayam dam. But in stark contrast, yesterday's electricity generation at the site stood at 2.1173 million units. Electricity generation at the dam site have decreased considerably over the last three months. While 147.0397 million units of electricity was produced in August 2022, only a mere 49.7518 million units of electricity was produced at the site in August 2023.

The water level in the Kakkayam dam stood at 746.45 metres yesterday, which is 12 metres lower than the dam’s maximum capacity. It is estimated that the dam is currently holding only 9.956 million cubic metres of water. The water levels in the Peruvannamuzhi dam have also decreased considerably this year.
