Perambra: An orange alert has been issued at the Kakkayam dam site, part of the Kuttiyadi hydroelectric project, due to rising water levels caused by continuous rainfall. The alert was declared on Monday morning after the water level reached 756.50 metres. Prior to this, a blue alert had been issued on August 31. The reservoir is currently 88.35 percent full.
Water is being transferred to the Kakkayam dam through a tunnel from the Banasura Sagar dam. The Kakkayam dam's maximum capacity is 758.05 metres. A blue alert is typically issued when the water level reaches 755.50 metres, while a red alert is triggered when it reaches 757.50 metres.
The dam's shutters were last opened on July 30 due to persistent heavy rains. Water is usually released when levels approach the red-alert threshold.

Setback for Tamil Nadu as Centre approves safety inspection of Mullaperiyar dam
Meanwhile in another major development, the Central Water Commission (CWC) has agreed to Kerala’s demand for a comprehensive safety inspection of the Mullaperiyar Dam. Tamil Nadu had previously requested that the inspection be postponed until 2026, citing the Dam Safety Act of 2021.
The detailed safety inspection, expected to be completed within 12 months, was approved during the 18th meeting of the Mullaperiyar Dam Supervisory Committee. Chaired by Rakesh Kashyap, the meeting took place at the CWC headquarters in New Delhi on Monday. The committee rejected Tamil Nadu’s argument for delaying the inspection, moving forward with Kerala’s long-standing request for a thorough assessment of the dam.
This inspection marks the first such detailed assessment since 2011, when a similar exercise was conducted by an Empowered Committee appointed by the Supreme Court. The current inspection will involve a panel of independent experts who will evaluate the dam's structural integrity, earthquake resilience, flood safety, and operational safety. The agenda for this inspection includes several points proposed by Kerala.
